Well after several years, on 28 November 2007, salsa at Toast on Wednesday nights finally comes to an end. The last Tango was on Monday. Toast closes its doors this week.
So come along and celebrate this institution.

“…and smoke fat cubans down there “, now now there is no need to be racist/fatist about killing fat cubans… you’ll end up in the CT for that sort of language…
I remember the Terrace Bar from there – this would be a good coming of age venue for me – and I like the idea of a bourbon/jazz bar – would be good to get an exemption from smoking laws and smoke fat cubans down there while drinking martinis and watching live jazz
Their sexual orientation will be their own business Mr E. Mælinar has a tolerant view of employee’s personal matters, as long as they keep it their personal matters.
electric shadows could be the rockers and groovers answer to academy. Would love to see it converted into a bar.
Hetro only; or will gay and lesbian waiting staff be employed too? 😉
(Mr Evil: bringing you a new balanced view of the world. A world where everyone can live in harmony – except recumbant cyclists – they can p1ss off!)
the electric shadows idea is a great one, though given Toast closed because of complaints of noise from the Waldorf (or so i’ve heard), surely they would have the same problems?…
…or does the soundproofing there totally fix things?
If someone decides to open up a replacement for toast – can they please have beer on tap? I don’t mind paying $4.50, even more, for beer in the city, but not bottled, that’s just a rip-off.
Danman, Thumper and JustBands – you are all pirating my beatniks idea.
My Jazz bar comes with sexy waiting staff too.
Set up a bar in the old electric shadows site. You have a dual amphitheatre with sound proofing and a raked floor so punters at the back can still clearly see the bands
A separate service area exists in the foyer for those looking to chat as well as see one of two shows playing.
Plus the site is iconic which is fun for the marketing person.
Thumper – I have always wanted to open a Jazz bar in Canberra as well.
I always envisioned the old Asylum bar would be good but Cafe Macchiato have evicted previous tenants.
Maybe someone could make a go of teh old Impact Records/JB HiFi site ?
Yay! Someone else used a phone! 🙂
Open a bar hey? Now there’s a good idea.
well, the answering machine at Toast confirms that they have now closed. It thanks you for your patronidge and states that you should now go and party somewhere else, like Transit Bar or Bar32, or better yet, go open your own bar!
Interesting…
Frankly, the appeal of Toast was lost on me after they got rid of Lithium – apparently the owner was too stingy to get the paranoid Lithium organiser a bouncer. Chrome just doesn’t measure up, too much electronica for my tastes.
So anyone know where we metalheads and those wannabe goths can go for a good night out now that Toast, the last bastion after the Green Room, is gone?
nope, toast is definately closing down this friday night. liquor board has been acting as a standover man for the waldorf to get toast closed and just gave a directive saying there is to be no amplified or electronic music after 10pm there. makes it hard to keep the place open.
it’s a fkn joke considering that the EPA have ruled many times that the place doesn’t make too much sound. liquor board took him to court one time previously using all epa measurements. this time they were more than happy to ignore them.
yay canberra bureaucrats
i second that johnboy. god i was told weeks ago while OS that it had had it’s last night and closed down – but in returning to work (and hence RA!) this week, i discover it’s still bloody open!
Toast has been closing down for a long time now…
Ever since it opened really.
Believe it when I see it.
