A tip-off from the national centre dedicated to fighting child exploitation has led to the arrest and charging of a Canberra man with child abuse-related offences.

The Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation made a referral to ACT Policing regarding the alleged uploading of child exploitation material.

As a result of their investigation, police raided a home in the southern Canberra suburb of Chifley on Wednesday (11 June).

“Multiple electronic devices allegedly containing child exploitation material were seized,” an ACT Policing spokesperson said.

Shortly afterwards, police arrested a man in connection with the allegations.

He had previously been convicted of sex offence-related crimes and, as a result, had reporting obligations to the ACT Child Sex Offender Registry Team.

However, police allege that he failed to report changes in his details as required so he was also charged with breaching those obligations.

The man, a 46-year-old from Chifley, was handed a total of five charges.

These were two counts of possessing child abuse material and using a carriage service for child abuse material, as well as a single count of failing to report as required.

He faced the ACT Magistrates Court on Thursday (12 June), where he did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody.

The matter will return to court at a later date.
