A tip-off from an organisation that combats the epidemic of child exploitation led to the arrest of a Canberra man over child abuse material allegations.

Earlier this month, police received information from the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation (ACCCE) about the user of an instant messaging application who had allegedly been sending child abuse material, an ACT Policing spokesperson said.

The Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Team made inquiries and allegedly linked a 50-year-old man from Barton, who currently isn’t named for legal reasons, to the account.

Police raided his home on Saturday (10 January) before seizing a mobile phone, which will be forensically examined.

The man briefly faced the ACT Magistrates Court this week, where he was charged with two counts of using a carriage service for child abuse material.

The alleged offences occurred in 2025.

He applied for bail and his lawyer, Legal Aid’s Duncan Errey, said the proposed bail conditions were by consent.

Prosecutor Cecilia Pascoe requested a slightly longer adjournment period than normal, saying police needed to download and review quite a volume of conversations from Kik.

Kik is an instant messaging app that is used over the internet and has features that can allow users to anonymise themselves.

Special Magistrate Sean Richter granted bail on conditions and adjourned the matter to 10 March. No pleas were entered.
