ACT Policing is urging motorists to remove valuables from their cars after an increase in car break-ins in Tuggeranong.
In the past fortnight (August 23 to September 7) there have been 15 car break-ins in a number of suburbs in Tuggeranong. Of the 15, five were trades-people’s cars and involved the theft of equipment and tools totaling more than $17,000.
ACT Policing is encouraging drivers to remove valuables from their cars, including store tools, equipment, iPads etc. to ensure they are secure and not in sight.
Officer-in-Charge of Tuggeranong Police Station, Sergeant Rod Anderson said that police believe the most recent thefts are opportunistic.
“The cars which have been broken into are parked outside of homes, not secured in garages, and items are clearly visible for anyone to see. These incidents are concerning to us as the items stolen in this case directly affect people’s livelihood,” he said.
“If you own a car, please ensure your valuables are removed and your car is secure. I would also like to ask the community to be on the look out for anyone offering tools and equipment for sale at cheap prices to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000,” Sergeant Anderson said.
Items stolen include generators, power tools, laser levels and battery kits.
