Does anybody know if you have to have a government issued proof of age card/drivers license to buy alcohol or cigarettes, or is it possible to just use a school i.d card?
I know that you need one for clubs, but not sure about other things…

Frankenstein, the only time you are ever going to remotely need the government id card is when there are some hotties up buying ciggies/alcohol and you want to impress them. Pulling out your Charnwood High id card is a bad move in that instance.
Therefore, the benefit of having a govt id card is that it’s rather more discreet than any other form of id, other than your passport.
They should only really accept a passport or an Australian proof of age card or drivers licnce.
Unless you’re cute and blonde and from Austria, and then you smile and they let you in, regardless. Seems to also get you free drinks.

If you’re not actually old enough then it’s quickest and easiest, and less likely to lead to trouble, to find an 18 year old willing to help you out.
