Sky News informs us that the extended search for explosives in the Mount Ainslie nature reserve has found four unexploded mortar bombs.

Defence said these items were found in the Canberra Nature Park on Mount Ainslie during a search for unexploded ordnance (UXO), old military ammunition fired but which failed to explode.

The survey follows the discovery of an item of old ammunition by a member of the public near the Campbell Park Defence Department offices in July last year.

Defence removed that item and undertook a preliminary survey which indicated there might be more UXO in an area used as a training ground and firing range in the 1940s and 1950s.
