Election Night can be a stressful time for us all. Whether you’re a real nerd for politics or just keeping up appearances, it’s a big night, especially for Canberrans! Local urban winery Contentious Character is here to make the night a little funnier for us all with its Contentious Election Night party.
Contentious Character’s Dairy Road urban winery location is already well known for their comedy debate series where comedians battle it out over topics like ‘Is wine better than sex?’ and ‘Who deserves a happy ending?’ But this event will see local comedians from across the political spectrum (including a few who don’t give a toss about politics at all!) with the funniest political humour since Bob Katter said, “Let there be a thousand blossoms bloom …”
But if 3 May is just another Saturday for you, Contentious Character managing director Ben Jarrett says there’ll still be plenty to keep you entertained.
“You don’t have to be political! It’s just going to be a night of good entertainment, but there’ll still be plenty for people who are into politics,” Ben told Region.

The $29 ticket covers the cost of the entertainment, with food and drinks available to purchase on the night. Ben explained that rather than lock everyone into a set menu, they wanted to keep it casual and accessible. The menu will also have a few special items, including, of course, the humble democracy sausage treated to something of a glow-up for the occasion.
Now we all know that election night isn’t over until Antony Green calls it, and this party is no exception.
“As long as the customers are still here and still keen, we’ll keep serving all night,” Ben said.
“My team are prepared to be here until it’s called!”

The comedians will be a surprise on the night – Ben explained that most of them have day jobs in the public service, so they’re staying low key (we won’t tell if you don’t!) – but the lineup is all prominent Canberra comedians and has been curated by the Canberra Comedy Team.
On the night, punters can expect:
- Absurd and witty political analysis from the panel throughout the night – Political games sillier than those played by the politicians
- A room full of strangers to share the chaos (because why stress alone?)
- The perfect excuse to drink wine and heckle the TV
So why not put your vote in for a nice glass of chardy and laugh away your worries this election night?
