ACT Policing is reminding members of the community about the penalties for receiving stolen property after reports that around $35,000 worth of stolen specialised power tools may have been offered to Canberra tradesmen.
In its ongoing investigation into a burglary at a building site in Narrabundah over the Easter long weekend, police are now seeking to confirm reports that the thieves have been attempting to on-sell the tools.
The burglary occurred when work at the development site in Bundeela Street, Narrabundah, ceased before the Easter long weekend. On returning to work the following week, subcontractors found that entry had been forced into secure siteboxes and over 100 tools stolen, including laser levels, drills and many orange Ramset-branded power tools. Many of the tools are also marked with the names of the subcontractors.
Sergeant Harry Hains said that anyone who may have been recently offered power tools suspected as stolen should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 and make the details and circumstances known to police.
“Knowingly receiving stolen property is a serious criminal offence.
Under the ACT Crimes Act, anyone who receives stolen property, knowing it to be stolen, potentially could face fines of more than $100,000 and/or up to 10 years imprisonment,” Sergeant Hains said.“Police are aware that these tools may have been on-sold. If you have been offered property you suspect may be stolen, contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via the Crime Stoppers website (www.act.crimestoppers.com.au). Information may be provided anonymously.”
