A tip-off by a member of the public about a person seen driving erratically through Gungahlin, led police to apprehend a 33-year-old Ngunnawal man with a blood alcohol content more than four times the legal limit.
Around 9.35 last night (Sunday, October 31), ACT Policing’s Operations Centre received a report of a car weaving along Gungahlin Drive. At one point, the car’s wheels hit the gutter.
The caller provided the registration number and description of the sedan to police, enabling officers patrolling in the area to identify the vehicle a short time later.
Police conducted a roadside screening test on the driver, who failed to provide a sufficient breath sample and was conveyed to Gungahlin Police Station for a second test. That test returned a high range alcohol concentration of 0.224.
The man was issued with an Immediate Suspension Notice and transported to the ACT Watch House. He was released this morning and will face the ACT Magistrates Court tomorrow (November 1).
Police Operations’ Acting Sergeant Nick Maguire said that this was an example of how a member of the community took a positive, proactive approach and contacted police when something was seen to be amiss.
“Police Operations is staffed 24/7 and values community observations and input about suspicious behaviour. We would strongly encourage everyone to program our 131-444 police reporting line and our 1800 333 000 Crime Stoppers number into their mobile phones,” Acting Sergeant Maguire said.
