ACT Policing has commended the Canberra public’s behaviour after the completion of fifth Operation Unite, with nine alcohol-related arrests over the weekend (December 2-4), including two for assault and one for urinating on a police vehicle. Four people were taken into protective custody for intoxication.
Officers from the ACT combined with police from across Australia and New Zealand in Operation Unite, which focuses on alcohol-related violence and anti-social behaviour.
ACT Policing committed significant resources to the operation, its officers conducting 584 random breath tests (RBTs), and extensive patrolling by Beats Team, General Duties, Crime Prevention, SRS K9, and Traffic Operations in and around the city and outlying entertainment areas.
Four people were apprehended for drink-driving during Operation Unite. Two drink drivers, one which recorded a blood alcohol content of 0.097 and the other 0.166, were apprehended during an intensive three-hour operation eastbound on Parkes Way near the Acton tunnel between 10pm and 1am Sunday (December 4).
The Alcohol Crime Targeting Team was active during the weekend, conducting patrols of licensed premises. Five licensing breaches were detected, including the service of alcohol to intoxicated persons.
The Operational Commander for the Operation Unite, Superintendent Brett Kidner, said there were relatively few issues and incidents for police.
“There’s no doubt that the presence of a large number of police through Operation Unite had a pacifying effect on public behaviour. While this operation may be over, police will continue to focus attention on alcohol-related offences in the lead-up to the busy Christmas-New Year period,” Supt Kidner said.
