Having recently returned from the Middle East, I am starting to feel the cold.
Could anyone tell me where I might buy an overcoat (not a jacket) to be worn over a suit.
I will try DJs of course but grateful for any other suggestions?

Try the shop in Manuka called To Desire,They had lot of beautiful over coats and stock lot of the european fashion stuff.
I got one of their jeans and truly loved the fitting.
My 2 cents.
R M Williams do excellent warm socks with a padded base – I wear them inside instead of slippers. I got 2 pairs for $20 on special recently at their shop in Manuka.
You can survive without an overcoat, but warm feet are a must! At least one pair of thick-soled boots or shoes are essential.

coat? why would you need more than a singlet in balmy canberra?
I know someone who just ordered a pair of hand knitted alpaca socks from Estonia. Bugger the carbon footprint, that person remarked. They just want warm feet in a truly hideous climate.
I know someone who recently purchased online a pair of very high-end bespoke goatskin, wool-lined over-the-knee boots from Prada.
Why is it that I had managed to live for 48 years without hearing the word “bespoke”?
That was until I bought a British 4wd a couple of years ago and associated magazines use the word.

Someone has lots of money, and must be very careful about getting drunk, and removing them while in the presence of cyclists.

Was not the Braidwood alpaca wool shop not good enough for them?
This person did not think of that, I’m sure. Perhaps this person will now feel guilty, and buy yet another pair of socks. Your sentence is a bit macramé, by the way…

Have to agree with those who say that an overcoat is rarely needed – and you certainly don’t need a heavy one. This is because it is not usually very windy here in winter, although it is cold at night. I bought my overcoat when I lived in Melbourne (where it is windy and wet in winter) and hardly ever wear it here.
So my advice is – don’t spend too much unless you are loaded. A nice lightweight Burberry or Aquascutum via the internet might be worth checking out. They can be found for $500ish, and never go out of fashion.

Once you’ve acclimatised you won’t need one unless you are walking a long way to work. Overcoats tend to be overkill in Canberra. I own three overcoats and I never, ever wear them.
+1
Although it can get cold here, Canberra’s climate still doesn’t match that of a European or US winter.
You could also try Myer. I’m not sure if its a bit early for the coats yet or not? Last year there was also a store that set up shop over winter selling coats.
You can have my Armani cashmere overcoat. As if! Get surfing ebay.co.uk or .com and you’ll find a bargain.

You can usually get good European ones in John Hanna and Blades in Civic. Usually well over the $1000 mark though.
Only people who haven’t heard of the internet shop at those stores.
Depends if you would like to try a few on first and dont mind so much the cost. They have the odd sales every now and again.

Thank you, OP, as this gives me a rare opportunity to boast, while seeming to offer advice.
I recently purchased a 1970s Savile Row suit on the intertubes for Mr Poetix. Perfect condition. Wool. Handmade. For about $50, including postage.
So you may wish to just look at Etsy or Ebay, although all the luck has obviously been used up.
For you and your husbands new suit I offer the following:

overcoat….talk about fashion don’t. ;)p
with all these items, you get what you pay for…a cheap coat won’t keep you warm but you should be able to find warm coats (wool ones are good) at most stores i would think
that said, for true warmth (and cos it’s puffy and fun to play with), can’t go past kathmandu or north face goose down jackets…mmmmm
i am super excited about winter…bring it on!! too hot lately…5oC mornings, not cold enough!
Arpelle at DFO had some overcoats when I was there the other day.
And, have to say I have noticed people already wearing wintery looking coats in Canberra. Does no one look at the weather forecast?
I’ve still got my coat from the UK, as old as it is. Have to admit though, it is a bit of overkill for the Canberra winter. Pair of gloves and a scarf and some kind of jacket does me. Anyways, if you want a coat from the Northern hemisphere, try UK online store Next…I think it’s http://www.nextdirect.com/au/en/home – delivered in 5 days.
I’m with fromthecapital. Few Canberra retailers actually bother to sell clothing suitable for the Canberra climate. Best to buy winter clothing from the northern hemisphere.
I used to be a Londoner and I still buy Ted Baker coats from UK retailers online.
