Australia votes this Saturday (3 May), and across the ACT, public school Parents and Citizens Associations (P&Cs) will be firing up the barbecues outside polling booths at public schools, offering the iconic ‘Democracy Sausage’.
It’s a cherished Australian ritual – and one that helps schools thrive.
President of the ACT Council of Parents and Citizens Associations Liane Joubert said these sizzling stalls were a cornerstone of community fundraising.
“Election day brings people together, and for our P&Cs, it’s a golden opportunity to raise funds that directly benefit local public schools,” she says.
“It’s a great example of community spirit – turning out to vote while supporting students through something as simple and satisfying as a sausage sandwich.”
Proceeds from these volunteer-run barbecues help schools purchase much-needed materials, improve facilities, and support student wellbeing initiatives.
To help voters plan, the Council has compiled a list of public school sites across the ACT hosting sausage sizzles on election day:
Ainslie School
Open 9 am to 3 pm, or until the barbecue is sold out. Sausages (vegan, and gluten-free options available), drinks, hashbrowns and cakes.
Amaroo School
Beef, chicken and vegetarian sausages with gluten-free bread available. Also baked goods and soft drinks.
Arawang Primary School
Sausage sizzle, bacon and egg rolls, drinks, coffee, fairy floss. Gluten-free and vegan options.
Bonython Primary School
Open 8 am to 4 pm. Democracy sausages and a cake stall. Halal, vegan and gluten-free options.
Calwell High School
Sausage sizzle and drinks.
Campbell Primary School
Sausage sizzle, Bake Sale and Small Business Hamper Giveaway. Dairy-free, vegan and gluten-free options.
Caroline Chisholm School
8 am to 3 pm. Sausage sizzle, egg and bacon rolls, cake stall.
Charles Conder Primary
Bacon and egg rolls, sausage sandwiches, vegetarian sausages, gluten-free bread will be available, and they’ll have cake. Funds will go towards for a new bike shelter and literacy resources.
Charnwood Dunlop School
Sausage sizzle, cake stall, books and games stall.
Curtin Primary School
Sausage sizzle and bake sale; dietary needs catered for.
Duffy Primary School
Sausage sizzle, egg and bacon rolls, pulled pork and slaw rolls, vegan sausages (with gluten-free options available), and a cake stall.
Fadden Primary School
Sausage sizzle and cake stall. Funds raised to support the school choir.
Farrer Primary School
Sausage sizzle, and bacon and egg rolls (vegetarian options available). Also, they’ll have a bake stall, plant stall and second-hand book sale.
Franklin School
9 am to 2 pm, or until sold out. Sausages (including halal and vegetarian) and baked goods.
Fraser Primary School
8 am to 3 pm sausages, and bacon and egg rolls (gluten-free bread available). Also a cake stall and book fair.
Giralang Primary School
Democracy sausages and egg and bacon rolls, Vegetarian and gluten-free available. Cold drinks and coffee van. Cake stall and plant stall. Plus a fete with face painting, hair spray, milkshakes, popcorn, fairy floss, book stall, lob a choc.
Gordon Primary School
Super-sized bake sale. No barbecue.
Gowrie Primary School
Bake Stall and sausage sizzle, with gluten-free options available. All funds go towards new resources.
Harrison School
Sausage sizzle, egg and bacon sandos, and soft drinks. Money to go to further school ground improvements and teacher resources.
Isabella Plains Early Childhood School
Sausages (gluten free and vegan options), bacon and egg rolls and coffee in the morning, as well as cold drinks, markets and raffles.
Latham Primary School
8 am start for sausages, bacon egg rolls and cake stall.
Lyneham Primary School
8 am to 3 pm. Sausage sizzle with vegan option, bake sale, plants and coffee, plus plenty of kids activities to keep the kids busy.
Macgregor Primary School
Sausage sizzle, bacon and egg rolls (vegan, gluten-free options), cake stall, ice cream truck.
Macquarie Primary School

Majura Primary School
9 am to 3 pm. Sausages, veggie option, epic cake stall and face painting.

North Ainslie Primary School

Southern Cross Early Childhood School
Barbecue (gluten free and vegan options), drinks, lolly bags, jelly bean guessing jar, cake stall.

Telopea Park School
Food with a French twist between 8 am and 2:30 pm. Patisseries early on then sausage sizzle in addition to “Galettes aux saucisses”. Cakes all day.
Torrens Primary School
Sausages (including vegan and halal) and baked goods from 9 am to 2:30 pm.
Turner Primary School
Sausage sizzle, drinks and baked goods sale from 8 am to 2 pm. Proceeds to support playground upgrade.
Wanniassa School – senior campus
Sausage sizzle, bacon and egg rolls, plant stall, book stall, fairy floss machine.
Weetangera Primary School
8 am to 2:30 pm. Barbecue and bake sale, gluten-free and vegetarian options. Coffee van. Proceeds to go to continued playgroup refurbishments.
Yarralumla Primary School
Sausage sandwiches, bacon and egg rolls and drinks. Vegetarians are well catered for.
