Members from ACT Policing, ACT Fire and Rescue, Rural Fire Service, ACT Ambulance Service, Australian Defence Force and the Brumbies were united in support of White Ribbon Day at the weekend raising more than $20,000 at the Men in Uniform stalls.
Between 9am and 1pm, the stalls were set up across Canberra in each major shopping centre and Bunnings warehouses to champion the elimination of violence against women in the community through White Ribbon Day merchandise.
Throughout the event, the stalls were swamped with support and words of encouragement from the community with a large number of people purchasing merchandise, making a donation and undertaking the oath.
ACT Policing’s White Ribbon Ambassadors, Acting Chief Police Officer Bruce Hill attended the Gungahlin stall, while Deputy Chief Police Officer David McLean assisted at Westfield Woden.
“The Men in Uniform was an amazing event, with a number of organisations joining forces for this worthy cause. The key message that violence against women needs to be eliminated in our community was well received and we gathered a lot of community support,” Commander Hill said.
“After a quick count of the donations, I’m delighted to be able to say that the Canberra community smashed last year’s total of over $8,000 by collecting more than $20,000 for the White Ribbon Foundation. It’s events like this that show just how generous and united the Canberra community is.”
“I would also like to thank the Bunnings stores, Gungahlin Marketplace, Westfield Woden and Belconnen, the Hyperdome and the Canberra Centre for allowing us to utilise their floor space. A mention is also needed for the men and women who assisted at the stalls and for giving up their own time to participate in this worthy cause,” Commander Hill said.
White Ribbon Day is 25 November. ACT Policing will be supporting the White Ribbon Day breakfast which will be held at the ACT Legislative Assembly from 7.30am on Friday.
