In the fast-moving world of data security and analytics, few names carry the weight of Splunk. But even industry giants need specialists – those who know their platform so well they’re practically an extension of it.

In Canberra, that’s veteran-owned security and data experts Hyperion3.

From its base in the nation’s capital, this small but elite team has become a go-to problem-solver for governments, industries and even Splunk itself.

Splunk, a Cisco company, is a unified security and observability platform that helps organisations collect, process and analyse machine-generated data to gain insights into IT operations, security and business processes.

Used extensively by the public sector and industry, Splunk helps them prevent major issues, bounce back from trouble and adapt quickly.

Hyperion3’s deep grasp of the platform has long been leveraged by Splunk to assist clients across the Asia Pacific. It culminated in Hyperion3 being named Splunk 2024 APAC Services Partner of the Year.

It’s an impressive track record for a business founded four years ago by two engineers responding to a gap in the market.

While working together as engineers at a large global technology services company, Hyperion3 co-directors Fadi Kobeissi and Matthew (Matt) Bennett watched with keen interest as other colleagues broke off to pursue specialist roles in the field.

They noticed a distinct lack of firms offering their level of expertise in professional services – specifically the Splunk platform.

“In Canberra one of the big issues is security clearances, which stretches the talent pool thin. Splunk is not the easiest thing to learn once you’re getting into the higher technical levels. So there are not enough people with both the skills and security clearance required for public service work,” Fadi says.

“The few that existed in these big companies were being overcommitted. They’d been promised to five different customers full time and the quality of work suffered for it.”

Fadi and Matt set out to create a company of techs, run by techs to give customers what they actually needed: a company where experienced engineers made the decisions, technical integrity wasn’t compromised by sales targets and clients got the attention and expertise they were paying for.

Mastery of the highly technical Splunk platform requires heavy investment that Matt says a lot of companies don’t want to take on.

By contrast, each member of the Hyperion3 team has been selected for their technological background, trained and developed to be a specialist, ready to handle any matter a client might bring to them.

“We wear all the hats. If a client calls and I happen to pick up, I know what can and can’t be done and can often fix it on the spot for them,” Matt says.

“It’s an agile and personalised service – and customers are noticing. They’re switching from previous providers to us.”

Every Hyperion3 staff member works towards achieving Splunk Core Consultant certification – a technically challenging milestone. Each also has a specialised background ranging from incident response to systems administration.

This allows Hyperion3, despite its boutique size, to respond to the needs of agencies big and small with highly technical depth.

The team also focusses on changing the perception that Splunk is too difficult or expensive to implement.

“Many agencies are only scratching the surface of what Splunk can do,” Matt says. “It’s incredibly powerful beyond just security data. When you start integrating data from across your organisation, that’s when the full picture emerges and that’s where the real return on investment begins.”
