ACT Policing caught 910 drivers speeding on Canberra roads during the month of October as part of its multi-agency road safety strategy.
Police issued a total of 650 Traffic Infringement Notices (TINs) for speeding and 260 cautions. There were 13 drivers arrested and will be summonsed for speeding offences.
Some 315 drivers were caught travelling more than 15km/h but less than 30km/h over the speed limit. A further nine drivers were caught travelling over 45km/h including a 25-year-old Downer man who was caught travelling at 170km/h in an 80km/h zone on the Monaro Highway. He was issued with a Traffic Infringement Notice (TIN) for $1811 and the loss of six demerit points.
Officer-in-Charge of Traffic Operations Sergeant Rod Anderson said the October results were extremely disappointing and clearly indicated that drivers still haven’t got the message that speeding is dangerous.
“Drivers who willfully speed were gambling with their own lives, the lives of other drivers and passengers, and the lives of children, pedestrians and cyclists,” Sergeant Anderson said.
“If you’re speeding you dramatically increase the risk of serious injury or death should you be involved in a collision. Drivers need to remember speed affects their ability to stop their car to prevent collisions.”
“Speeding is a choice people make and they can just as easily make the choice to slow down and save lives.
“I’m also concerned by the 88 motorists that received TINs for speeding in school zones.
“Speeding in school zones exposes some of the most vulnerable people in our community to the greatest risk; there is no excuse and we don’t except any excuses.”
ACT Policing will be focusing on alcohol and drug impaired driving over the Summer months.
