Having yesterday trumpeted the “record” visitor numbers to Floriade today the Canberra Times has unleashed numerical gibberish as Andrew Barr attempts to defend the numbers.
Apparently there will be a real release of proper numbers later this month.

Having yesterday trumpeted the “record” visitor numbers to Floriade today the Canberra Times has unleashed numerical gibberish as Andrew Barr attempts to defend the numbers.
Apparently there will be a real release of proper numbers later this month.
However…
The number of visits was significantly more than the number of actual visitors.
Way to state the obvious, Canberra Times.
The hotels work off bed-nights (two people staying in two beds for two nights = four bed-nights), Floriade itself works off people-visits (one visitor walking into Commonwealth Park five times = 5 visits).
No hotel occupant can occupy a bed for less than a whole night[1], nor can a person visit Floriade less than one time and still be defined as a ‘Floriade visitor’.
Floriade actual visitor numbers can never be less than number of visits.
[1] Hotel’s Association don’t run rooms ‘by the hour’ or fractions of nights, as far as I know…
Why does it matter whether the visitors are “individual” or returning? When movies calculate their takings, they don’t disqualify those that saw it multiple times! If a record number of people passed through the gates – a record number of people passed through the gates fullstop. I would have thought the standard for recording the success of Floriade would be simply numbers through the gate…
If indeed Hotels were “house full” at the time of Floriade, I’m inclined to (OMFG) agree with Mr Barr on this one… and that could well be a first…
