No plate ute takes aim at Police

ACT Policing is investigating a collision in which two vehicles, including a police car, were damaged.

Around 11.00am today (Sunday, August 11), two officers were in a marked police car on routine patrol on Deamer Crescent, Chisholm when they noticed a black ute with no number plates.

Police activated their emergency lights and sirens indicating for the driver to stop, however the driver accelerated a short distance losing control of the ute.

The ute spun around onto the wrong side of the road before accelerating into the police car.

The driver of the police car was taken to the Canberra Hospital with head injuries, while the driver of the ute was unharmed.

ACT Policing Collision Investigation and Reconstruction Team (CIRT) attended the scene and are investigating the incident.

The driver of the ute was taken into custody and is expected to be charged with traffic offences.

Ha ha ha, that’s GOLD! I actually saw a police car driving in Canberra once… and even then, the occupants totally ignored and drove right past a guy who was stopped in a ‘No Stopping’ zone while yabbering away on his phone.

There’s a very small chance of even seeing a police car on ACT roads, and an even smaller chance that the people inside are actually paying attention to anything while they’re on their way back to the station.

I suspect the correct answer is “people who do it a lot without getting caught”.

Seriously, if the Police were to have some sort of committed presence in Tuggeranong (and other places I’m sure), the deterance effect alone would remove unregistered vehicles from our suburbs.

Unfortunately, the high likelihood of not getting caught (unregistered, speeding, DUI) makes it more likely that people will offend like this. A fixed camera on the Monaro Hwy and the very occasional speed trap on Isabella Drive do nothing to prevent and deter people from behaving however the hell they want on the suburban rat runs.

Heagney Cresent and Deamer Cresent are the personal play-things of passing traffic and some resident hoons. I’m glad the driver was apprehended, but he was dead-set unlucky to get caught.

All police cars? Is that really the case? If so it’s fantastic, but I thought that the plate recognition kit was only in the RAPID vehicles.

And has the requirement for rego stickers actually been removed as a result of this or was it a result of some other measure?

I probably see about one a month on average, and I’m not even on the road a lot (I did about 10,000km in my car over the last year – about half the generally accepted average). Imagine how many you’d see if you were actually going looking for them (as the Police should be)

It did happen in chisholm which seems to be worse than quangers these days.
