Burnout legend on the run in Gordon

A 20-year-old Gordon man will be summonsed to ACT Magistrates Court on multiple traffic charges after an incident in Gordon early this morning (Friday, 6 September).

About 1.30am Police observed a dark-coloured Holden Commodore utility perform a prolonged burnout at the roundabout intersection of Woodcock Drive and Knoke Avenue.

Police activated their emergency lights and sirens in an attempt to cause the vehicle to stop. The driver accelerated away on Woodcock Drive.

After about thirty seconds, the driver stopped the vehicle in a driveway. Both the driver and passenger fled on foot. Both men were taken into custody with the passenger released a short time later.

The driver was transported to Tuggeranong Police Station where he was required to undergo breath analysis. He returned a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) of 0.092.

As the holder of an expired licence he was issued with an Immediate Suspension Notice (ISN).

The vehicle has been seized by police. The man will face court on a date yet be fixed.

PS what the fuck makes you think a burnout is “attempted murder” ….. so if you were in the wet, and had a sustained loss of traction taking off from a set of lights, … that makes you an attempted murderer too?

You don’t seem you understand the difference between a burnout competition and driving down a public road.

You also don’t seem to understand the difference between legal and illegal.

You don’t get insurance incase some bell end may be doing a burnout and hit your car.
You don’t seem to understand insurance.

Go educate yourself before commenting again.

I wouldn’t like it. Isn’t that the point? If people want to do brain dead activities like burnouts (each to their own – I don’t have a problem with it IF it’s legal), they can go to comps (as you’ve mentioned). Don’t do it on the streets.

So what’s the problem? If you’re that desperate to do a burnout and impress your friends, do it somewhere that isn’t a public road and you won’t have to worry about the police raining on your parade.

I’m all for the crushing. He was above the limit AND his license was already suspended, therefore it’s obviously not the first time he’s tried it. On top of that, he attempted to flee… To me, that just screams that he’s unfit to drive responsibly.

If you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime.

I try really hard not to break laws. If I do, I should pay the price agreed by society and reflected in legislation. I mean, I’m pretty sure if I broke the law with a weapon, or a computer, or a crowbar, they wouldn’t be waiting for me when I got out.

Or are you suggesting that asking criminals “how would you like it?” is a rational basis for a justice system? “Actually, that would make me sad.” “Oh, well we won’t do it, then. Carry on.”

Personally, I think a burnout (considered as an isolated concept, without considering location, nearby people etc) is treated in a completely disproportionate way to many other things which are dangerous while driving. Compare the points/fine for running a red light or driving an un-roadworthy vehicle.

On the other hand, driving while drunk and unlicensed, in combination, should be a “very serious thing™”, and I really think things like vehicle crushing might actually make people like this think twice about going for what was probably an unnecessary, spur of the moment, joy ride.

That’s why we don’t break the law by doing burnouts while drunk and without a licence to drive any way. If I wanted to do burnouts, I would do it where its legal to do so like Summernats or other organized competitions around the country.
