North Weston is actually South-west?!

Is it just me or do others think the naming of the new Molonglo suburb sounds a bit dumb? I was thinking it was just a temporary name until they pulled the proper name out of a hat, or whatever they do. But this seems to be it. Maybe we should shift the focus from politicians on to something like entertainers so we could have “Crocker” (as in Barry)?

You mean North Weston will be bounded by … Cotter Rd, except for the part of it that is on the other side of Cotter Rd?? So logical!

Also they are not ADFA residences, it’s the Australian Command and Staff College, and there is no accommodation on site more info. Many of the officers who attend live in DHA properties in Weston Creek.

Fiona North Weston is nowhere near closer to Civic than Weston, it adjoins the suburb of Weston at Heysen St. Even if by “Weston” you mean “Weston Creek commercial precinct”, North Weston is still closer to there than Civic. As the crow flies, the new suburban blocks in North Weston are approx 2km from Coolo and 8km from Civic.

I disagree with the above, reported as my comment, concerning James Martin being a former soldier. That information was provided by ACT Place Names, obtained from Ged Martin’s book, ‘Episodes of Old Canberra’ (1978), and placed by them, within my text. It was an incorrect statement which they have finally rectified. James Martin (also Taylor) was one of twin sons born to convict Ann Wilson/Taylor (per Sydney Cove 1807). In August 1827, he applied to the government to rent 2000 acres of land with a view to purchase, on what later became known as ‘Yarrolumla’. He was presumed to occupy this land by 1826. Technicalities hindered his claim and he could not obtain a grant. He tried to obtain a grant at Jerrabomberra, but Campbell beat him to it. Martin ended up near Bombala. NSW.

If you’re referring to the one that ran from near the War Memorial up to the Highway, that would be Monash Drive.

The next but one electoral boundary redistribution will be a pain as a result…

Agreed with the stupidity of naming it, but it was probably more the Government being their lazy selves. It is likely that they will rename the electorate as a result of the suburb.

What on earth are you on about? The construction project was called the Gungahlin Drive Extension (makes sense) the road itself is called Gungahlin Drive (also makes sense).

These pipes are sewerage.
Sewage is the waste that flows through the sewerage.
Hence we have multiple sewage treatment plants, but no sewerage treatment plants.

The below gives a description of the name behind Weston. The name comes from George Weston, and has nothing to do with being West of anything. I guess if it was originally bound by the Molonglo then calling it North Weston seems to be sticking to its roots.

The suburb of Weston is named after a former homestead (Weston Homestead) in the Woden district, Australian Capital Territory.

The following information has been supplied by Trish Frei (BA) local historian and member of the Canberra District Historical Society.

The Weston Creek grant was once held by Captain George Edward Nicholas Weston, a former Captain of the East India Company. George was born on 29 November 1796 in West Horsley, Surrey, England. He departed for Australia on 4 January 1829 from Ile de France, Mauritius on the merchant ship ‘Vesper’.

He arrived in Sydney on 14 March 1829, and married Blanche Johnston on 21 May 1829 at St. James’s Church, Sydney. George’s wife, was the daughter of George Johnston (1764-1823) who sailed in the Lady Penrhyn with the marine detachment in the First Fleet, and reputedly was the first man ashore at Port Jackson in January 1788.

Just after their marriage, George and his wife returned to India to wind up his affairs and then return to Australia to settle. They returned much later than expected, with two children, on the ‘Caroline’, arriving at Sydney on 31 July 1831 from India.

The 2560 acre, ‘four-square miles’, grant to George Weston at the ‘Yarrow-Lumla plains’ was completed on 31 October 1831, together with all buildings, ways, etc, bounded on the north by the Molonglo River and on the West by the Johnston’s, Weston’s brothers-in-law.

Martin had already built a ‘good Substantial dwelling-house’ of three rooms with a barn, and grazed cattle and sheep and cleared and planted 20 acres, with 12 acres sown with wheat. He is presumed to have been in occupation by the year 1826 but he could not obtain a grant and technicalities hindered his claim.
