So kiddlies and curmudgeons, what’s worth doing and seeing this weekend?

They had “speshul” events out at Brand Ploppo Thurs and Fri evenings, but the main event is Saturday. Avoid the area: Fairbairn, Majura, Pialligo, Airport, Morshead, the lot of it.
Canberra drivers + heavy traffic = ugliness and uneccessary gridlock.
With all the construction at the Jamison centre, are the Sunday morning Jamo markets still on ?
I thought that brand depot thing didnt open till tomorrow?…waste of space it is.
but Nyssa, you’ll miss out on all those grand opening discounts. Hangon, I thought they were already *discounted* heavily.
“but when it works (particularly during the ACT II opening, “Too Darn Hotâ€) it really works.”
The guy that sings that is my friend’s son.
I’ll be down the coast looking at a house….then back here. I won’t even try to look at Brand Depot (just curious is all) until after the school holidays (which starts next weekend).
Yup, total fucking shambles at 5:30. Trip from Fyshwick to AAE at the airport (all of about 4Km) took almost 25 minutes.
Avoid the “factory outlets” debacle at the airport. This arvo, 5ish, I’ve never seen such utter gridlock. The Brindabella Park traffic hadn’t even hit the mess yet, but every roundabout from Duntroon was locked up with idiots queued across them, so no one could move. Naturally, there were no police anywhere to explain the rules of the road (or even common courtesy or common sense) to the idiots. Actually there are no police in Canberra any more, they are all working for Protective Services and making toast in the guardrooms of gov’t departments.
Canberra Youth Music bands, orchestras and choirs performing at Floriade Saturday pretty much all morning.
Fashion parades at Belconnen Mall Friday 6.30 and 7.30pm and Saturday 12.30 and 1.30pm (hopefully will have pics for y’all by Monday).
St John’s annual orchid show all weekend.
Also some swap meet at the Queanbeyan showground, I think all weekend.
Sneaky Sound System are apparently performing at Academy on Friday night
FRIDAY at the Pot Belly: The Cold Heart Projects, Radiant City (Mel) and rumours that The Guests will be playing too.
At the Potbelly this Saturday (23rd). Some fine entertainment, raising money for the Spina Bifida Association.
Bands played are: The Guests, Australian Kingswood Factory, Once Divine, 5th Ave Crazy and The Ashburys (acoustic)
Variodivers tonight at the greenroom with Team Truckstar and The Floors $10
Monster Trucks are on Fri and Sat at the Greyhound track at Narabundah. Tix $30 from Supa Barn.
Sunday there’s a cycling thing at Queanbeyan. More info: http://www.pedalpower.org.au/news/index.asp#1103
There’s a big truck on Adelaide avenue advertising a monster truck rally – unfortunately, I can’t remember when or where it is. But the truck’ll probably still be there today and tomorrow (northbound, opposite the mint).
For the more culturally inclined – Kiss Me Kate finishes off at the ANU arts centre this week (performances tonight, tomorrow night and saturday arvo and evening) – having seen it, I’d call it uneven, but when it works (particularly during the ACT II opening, “Too Darn Hot”) it really works.
Rep kicks off “School For Scandal” this week, with big wigs, and lots of acerbic wit and gossip – $20 preview tonight, before opening night tomorrow and Sunday night, then onwards up til october 14th.
And Impro ACT has their “Retro TV” challenge this Sunday at the Street theatre, with lots of making stuff up, possibly with minor tie-ins to the actual theme of the night. Two-thirds of the Challenge-winning team from Sydney will be back to participate, so it should be at least mildly impressive.
