Odd…
In fact, take a look at google maps. The resemblance to Canberra is quite striking in some ways.
not an experienced globe traveller here.. though I have the bug…. for some reason the places i want to go the most are those hot weather (love deserts) 3rd world type places and if i wasn’t such a pansy I probably would have already.
Flew past ND at dead of night not that long ago…well the first difference with Canberra is, it’s f****ing ji-normous!
man i wanna go to india. wanna get some more travel up my sleeve before i do though.
It’s not as odd as it may seem at first – New Delhi is largely a planned, built from scratch city, much like Canberra – it’s not so surprising then that it might have a similar feel.
If he was only 12th man (drinks carrier) and didn’t get onto the paddock at all in the Newcastle game, then you are right. Only he would remember, I guess!
Looks like the NSW/Qld game, 14-16 November 1997 – he was actually 12th man!
OK, so that was his first 1-day appearance for NSW; but his first 4-day game was some weeks earlier.
Well the Newcastle game was a 4-dayer, for sure. I guess he could have played a 1-dayer previously, I don’t know – but I well recall his teammates (those who weren’t out on the paddock batting) giving him big handshakes etc.
very unusual thing to say. Let alone insunating that he liked canberra… how often does anyone of public notoriety admit that the place isnt as bad as it is made out.
Then again he could secretly mean that he thinks delhi is a shithole.
You could be right, but I thought it was a four-dayer. By a bizarre circumstance (tell you about it over a beer sometime), I was standing within earshot of Brett and the NSW 2nd XI manager/coach when Brett got his call-up to the 1st’s. He had to pull out of the 2nd XI game which had already started (v. Bushrangers at Hurstville Oval) in order to get to Newcastle for the next day. This was in October or November 1997. Natch, he and his teammates were really chuffed about it…
You sure, Thumper? His first game for NSW was in Newcastle – but I thought it was v. Bushrangers.
