Drive it like you stole it

A stolen BMW with ACT registration plates (YEX 52D) was involved in three separate pursuits across Canberra with ACT Policing last night (Monday January 10).

The first pursuit occurred in Tuggeranong around 6.35pm, with the second occurring on Parkes Way 10 minutes later, and the third pursuit occurring in Belconnen shortly after.

All three pursuits were terminated by police due to concerns of the possible risks to the public due to the dangerous and erratic driving of the offending driver. At one stage the driver of the stolen BMW reached an approximate speed of 190km/h in a 90km/h posted zone.

The vehicle is a blue coloured BMW sedan.

Police are urging anyone who may know the whereabouts of the BMW or the offending driver to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers website on www.act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.

Thats not terribly fast. If he did it at 8:30am that would be a different story. What I find more impressive is that in the drive between tuggeranong and belconnen, he found 3 police vehicles patrolling the roads, talk about a run of bad luck.

Not allowing the police to chase serious criminals might actually have the opposite effect giving little incentive to stop when one could simply increase their speed to 190’ish, drive like a complete maniac until the police “terminate” the pursuit. People driving around in a stolen car might very well be teenagers taking a “one-off” joyride or they could be real criminals using the car to do some bad things.

I hope the police are allowed to do their job even with all of these restrictions placed upon them.

It’s probably a bigr public risk having criminals walk among us, who don’t respect the polices ability to chase them nor the courts ability to prosecute them in any serious way.

Let them get away? If a car is traveling at close to 200km/h, it’s in the public’s interest not to chase. Espically if the driver crosses to the wrong side of the road to escape.

Yes, at least the police could’ve had a crack at shooting the fleeing crook. A bullet in the back of the head would teach him a lesson and it always looks easy when it’s done in the movies, especially when the vehicle is travelling at190kmh.

I imagine the public would be very supportive of police executing car thieves in the fashion you suggest. You have my vote for the Commissioner when Negus gets bored with it.

I’d bet you’d be more impressed if your loved one was killed as a result of the Pursuit…

They certainly seem to love their pursuits over there. I was wondering what their stats were for pursuit fatalities, and came up with this:
About 360 people are killed each year in police chases, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
