ACT Policing arrested a 26-year-old male driver after he attempted to evade police, collided with light pole and two fences, and was later found asleep under a car in a Charnwood garage early today (Tuesday, February 8).
About 1.40am today police patrolling in Lhotsky Street, Charnwood, conducted a roadside screening test for alcohol on the driver of a Honda Civic. The driver returned a positive reading. The police were about to take the driver into custody when he drove off at speed.
Police were initially unable to locate the vehicle but then found the Honda damaged and abandoned on the roadside and saw the driver entering the rear yard of a residence in Pringle St. A search of the surroundings found the man asleep under a car parked in the garage.
Police will allege the man’s car had struck two fences, a light pole and had damaged a gas main in Charnwood. ACT Fire Brigade and Actew AGL were required to attend, as the damaged gas main required capping for safety.
The offender was taken into custody and later returned a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of 0.167. The offender is currently disqualified from driving and is subject to a zero blood alcohol limit.
He is being held in the ACT Watch House and is expected to face the ACT Magistrates Court later today being charged with drink driving, driving whilst disqualified and breach of bail.
