ACT Policing are reminding all motorists to be diligent around vehicle security after a number of vehicles were broken into in the Woden and Weston area this week.
Superintendent Kylie Flower from ACT Policing’s Crime Prevention Team said thieves will generally target vehicles that are left unsecured and have valuables in view.
“Many thieves are opportunistic and will look for vehicles that are unlocked and have valuable items in view. It’s also important to remember that you not only lock your vehicle but also make sure valuable items are not left in your vehicle,” she said.
Superintendent Flower said that there are a number of things people can do to help avoid being targeted by thieves.
“If you have to leave valuable items in your vehicle, make sure you place them out of sight. Under the seat or in the boot and if possible do this before you reach your destination. Also, it’s a good idea to remove your GPS and wipe the marks off the window,” she said.
Items stolen from vehicles in recent weeks included a blackberry, portable dvd player, cds, cash and vehicle registration papers. Police would urge anyone that sees any suspicious behaviour to call police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
