Westfield Belconnen was kept busy after numerous fires were detected within the mall and a number of hoax bomb threats made (Monday, May 30).
About 11.35am police were contacted by ACT Fire Brigade in relation to a small fire near the service elevator on the ground floor near K-Mart. The fire was extinguished by staff prior to attendance by emergency services.
Another small fire started at about 2pm in the loading bay area with a minor section of the mall evacuated.
Westfield Security also received a number of phone calls during this time, alleging that a bomb was inside one of the vacant stores.
A 29-year-old Evatt man is assisting police with enquiries.
Anyone who may be able to assist police with the investigation are asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via www.act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.
