A bit back they installed this new artwork on the corner of Hindmarsh Drive and Brierly St.
I finally found time to take a few photos.

A few embedded fingernails and ribs and items of clothing would have made the message even clearer.
Has anybody noticed that every time they improve a road, they also chuck up a bit of public art?
And lower the speed limit.

Thoroughly Smashed, are you a drunk or a panelbeater?

This piece annoys me every time I drive past. Especially at night. Something about the giant dark silhouettes at night creeps me out. Especially now Ive learned they are filled with broken parts of cars from accidents where people have been critically injured. Why display that at an already stupidly designed busy intersection? Why can’t Cooleman court present themselves with a nice sign that says “Cooleman Court” like every other local shop in the district.
It’s the Children of the Cooleman Corn.
They come alive at night and attack unsuspecting motorists.

ahh, I wondered when “the chicken pox family” would make it to RA 🙂
The Orana family out for a short walk in the Hindmarsh Kush.
Just what I was thinking.
From the artist…
“A crude representation of the family I ran down one drunken night”

A Short Walk, 2011
A landmark for the main turn into the Weston Creek Centre, A Short Walk consists of figure silhouettes of a big sister, little brother and little sister that derive from the pedestrian crossing sign. The grouping suggests friendship, family and community, while the incorporation of broken tail light reflectors betrays the artist’s longstanding concern with car culture and road safety issues.
I reckon they make their bit of art first, and then make up something deep and meaningful afterwards, when they have to sell it. I mean, family and community, + road safety? WTF?!

You will notice the father figure is missing from the lovely ‘family’ picture
It’s actually meant to be a teen and two younger children, though my 7yo is insistent that it’s a Mum and two kids.
And yes those are broken up bits of car lights.
I love this art, even though it’s a somewhat stupid place to depict children walking because nobody in their right mind would cross the road there. And the number of groups of mixed age kids that you see walking around together these days is about…zero.
The sculpture lighting at night makes the bits of broken coloured plastic look particularly good IMO.

They are making the roads safer. Didn’t you hear about the new speed cameras?
Believe it or not, I’m pretty sure that the (currently covered) signs on Hindmarsh Drive refer to them as “Safety Cameras”. It’s just like being on the Hume Highway!

I pass by this statue on an almost daily basis and it angers me, not just because of – oh yay more “community” art – but this corner doesn’t need giant concrete distractions to even further endanger motorists. There have been a number of accidents here, including a fatality last year (link below)

For goodness sakes, can the ACT govt try to make the roads safer, instead of putting this gaudy crap up!!!!

Crossdressing in a mini-skirt?
See, isn’t this what public art is all about?
Open to your own interpretation and for healthy public debate 🙂

I love this piece.. I call it “memorial to the dead beat dad”.
You will notice the father figure is missing from the lovely ‘family’ picture, no doubt out working two jobs to pay alimony so he doesn’t get cut off from seeing the kids every second weekend.
Well they couldn’t have a man walking alone with two children now could they?
He’d obviously be abducting them.

Interesting…
So you are a single mum?
Or better known as a “Centerlink mum”.

With the amount of accidents on the roundabout 10m down from this, they would have had a great supply of broken head/tail lights.
I hope it is broken head/tail lights, would be rather fitting.
What’s the material that’s in the concrete? From the second photo, it looks for all the world like someone’s swept up the broken brake light and blinker plastic after a car accident, and used that in the sculpture.
