I also love the yard dog trials. The dogs are so amazingly focused and there’s something wonderful about seeing Kelpies in action doing their job. My two Kelpies are pets and have a very good life but I think their working counterparts also get a real thrill out of working sheep.
I saw part of this demo yesterday. It was really worth watching, George is a very talented sheepdog. His handler was throwing out a constant stream of “George, George, get back George, get around George, George, George” with a few whistles here and there. In my mind, the dog seemed to be figuring out 90% of it for himself though, and doing a very efficient job of it with some reluctant and stubborn sheep.
When the sheep were herded in the pens, it was great fun to see George scramble across the top of the sheep to get to the other end, then disappear, then cause a wave of freaking-out sheep as he made his way back underneath them.
