Police allege a man filmed himself deliberately running down two kangaroos in a 4WD while in a rural area of the ACT.

NSW Police told ACT Policing last June about two videos that allegedly showed a man committing animal cruelty offences.

Due to the referral, ACT Policing and ACT Parks and Conservation began a joint investigation before announcing charges had been laid.

It is alleged Andrew Kevin James Skidmore, 24 from Kaleen, filmed two videos of himself driving on the Kings Highway in the rural suburb of Kowen in April 2024.

The first video allegedly shows him driving onto the wrong side of the road and hitting a kangaroo.

In the second video, it is alleged he drives in the breakdown lane and onto the grass verge before hitting a kangaroo grazing near the roadway.

“Police allege both incidents were deliberate acts,” an ACT Policing spokesperson said.

Mr Skidmore was issued charges over the allegations. He faces two counts of aggravated cruelty to an animal, dangerous driving and using a mobile phone while driving.

While the matter was scheduled to be heard in the ACT Magistrates Court on Thursday (1 May), Mr Skidmore didn’t appear in person.

The court heard Mr Skidmore sent an email to explain he thought the court date was next week and did not yet have a lawyer, although he had applied to Legal Aid.

The matter was adjourned to 19 May. Mr Skidmore is not on bail.
