UPDATE 16 July, 7:45 am: A 28-year-old man who allegedly escaped from a correctional facility in Cooma has been arrested following an overnight manhunt in the state’s south.
At about 2:30 pm on Tuesday, 15 July 2025, police were called to the Cooma Correctional Centre after reports an inmate had escaped.
Officers from Monaro Police District began the search immediately, and tracked him down at a service station on Sharp Street, Cooma – about a kilometre away – just after midnight.
The man was transported to Cooma Police Station, where he remains in custody.
Police say investigations into the circumstances of the escape are ongoing.
UPDATE 15 July, 9 pm – Police do not believe escaped Cooma prison inmate Dillon Mitcherson is armed with a shiv.
The public is still urged not to approach him, and to call Triple Zero (000) immediately if they see him.
15 July, 7:30 pm – Police are hunting for inmate Dillon Mitcherson who escaped from a Cooma correctional facility earlier today (Tuesday, 15 July).
The 28-year-old was last seen at the prison at about 2:30 pm.
Police initially believed he may be armed with a shiv.
Dillon is described as being of Caucasian appearance, of medium build, 175 to 180 cm tall, with short brown hair.
He was seen wearing a green shirt and green pants.
Anyone who sees Dillon is urged not to approach him but to contact Triple Zero (000) immediately.
