I was experimenting with the camera down by the lake a couple of days ago. The experimental shots turned out rubbish, so I grabbed a couple of HDRs of the Nat Library so that the drive wasn’t a total waste.

FYI
Many camera do an in camera HDR these days, but best results come from DIY. If you are new to it, look up EV bracketing for your camera. You can then take 3 or 5 images at intervals from say 0.3/0.5 to 1EV. Combine in Photomatix.
Best done shooting in RAW IMO also.
Also good to do it when you have deep shadows, it helps bring out details in the shadows. You can get some other worldly photos from HDR processing.
Great stuff. In that second picture, I kinda wish the library wasn’t there, because it’s in the way of that awesome sky!
As for the banners, they don’t bother me at all. They’re only hanging over the entrance, which happens to be on the narrow end of the building. Against the library’s most visible side, facing the lake (as ssen in photo 2), there’s nothing hanging at all. Hardly an intrusion I’d argue.
Great pics. I like the blue too. I’m loving the photogenic clouds lately.
(About the lawn though, nothing’s going to convince me a nicely landscaped and useful car park wasn’t both much needed and completely possible. And I never use to mind the banners when they advertised an occasional blockbuster exhibition but I’ve been thinking lately that it looks intrusive and feels way overused now. Btw what happens to the old banners, are they recyclable?)
Thanks guys. I used Photomatix for the HDR merge with a little post tweaking in Photoshop.
Deref, I debated correcting for the blue, but decided that I kind of liked it, so… 😉
I wish the NLA would stop wrecking the architectural facade with those banners … great photo though!
HDR stuff needs to be done well so that the colours, while saturated, appear reasonably natural. The library’s too blue in those.
I’m not saying I could do any better, of course.
Ozhair sweet pics!
If you are going to DIY your HDR – grab Photomatix, Photoshop HDR merge is a bit yuk.
Thanks for posting this pic! I had no idea what HDR was, I Googled it then wondered if my new Nikon 5100 could do it. I found out it could. I’ll be dusting off the tripod and remote control.
It is almost impossible to take a bad shot of NLA, especially at night. It is one of the most photogenic buildings in Canberra. The bookshop inside with the stained glass windows comes up especially well if you can get the lighting balance right.
That is niice. Is this using a camera that does the HDR for you or one where you take the photos and DIY it?
That 2nd HDR is amazing Ozhair! The library looks so much nicer from this angle now that the Patrick White lawns have been refurbished.
