A rental tenant has been refused bail after he allegedly threatened to kill his property manager.

On Monday morning (28 July), it is alleged 36-year-old Bobby Lee Boyd sent several messages to his property manager, including threats to kill her.

He was arrested at his home in Lyneham the next day.

“Police will also allege the man repeatedly attended the woman’s workplace and verbally abused her and other employees,” an ACT Policing spokesperson said.

Boyd was charged with using a carriage service to threaten and stalk before he faced the ACT Magistrates Court on Wednesday (30 July) and applied for bail, which was opposed by the prosecution.

Magistrate Glenn Theakston said it was alleged he sent seven to eight messages to the person who managed his accommodation, making “very direct and alarming” threats.

These alleged threats involved “extreme violence” to her, he said.

Defence lawyer Sam Collett of Legal Aid said while the allegations were concerning, it was clear there were mental health issues in play.

He said his client has several mental health diagnoses.

Mr Collett said the allegations related to “a rent issue” in which his client became “quite heightened”.

Prosecutor Andrew Chatterton alleged there was a history between Boyd and the property manager.

He argued there were no bail conditions that could be imposed to reduce the risks of his release.

Boyd spoke up during the hearing, including to say, “I know there’s no excuses”.

“I’ve had a hard time, your honour,” he said.

“I’ll make sure I do the right thing.”

Magistrate Theakston said his main concern was the alleged risk of Boyd harming others if granted bail.

“People who make threats to others need to understand the court will take those threats seriously,” he said.

He refused bail, remanded Boyd in custody and adjourned to 21 August. No pleas were entered.
