A car chase was filmed from the sky when police followed a stolen car as it was driven from Sydney all the way to Canberra this week.

Police officers were patrolling Surry Hills in Sydney about 10 pm on Tuesday (29 July) when they attempted to stop a white hatchback.

Checks revealed it had allegedly been stolen from Melbourne in Victoria a few days earlier, a NSW Police spokesperson said.

The car allegedly failed to stop and crashed into a marked police vehicle, then a pursuit was initiated when its driver tried to drive away from the scene.

This pursuit was terminated a short time later due to safety concerns.

The driver of the police vehicle in the crash was not injured.

Then, about an hour later, police spotted the car on the M7 motorway and began another pursuit, which ultimately lasted until the driver reached the ACT.

“Officers from multiple commands assisted, including the Hume Police District, Monaro Police District, Traffic and Highway Patrol Command and PolAir, before the vehicle travelled across the border and into the ACT,” the police spokesperson said.

ACT Policing arrested the alleged driver, a 43-year-old man, early on Wednesday morning (30 July) in Downer, ACT.

Police will seek to extradite him to NSW.

The police pursued a car in a high speed chase from Sydney to Canberra? Rather than putting motorists lives at risk maybe they should have phoned ahead so that actions could have been taken to minimise any threat!

I hope NSW police didn’t breach NSW/ACT borders. We saw that 10 years ago when Queanbeyan police pursued a car into Canberra with catastrophic consequences. Sparking community outrage there had been 12 police pursuits resulting in 9 deaths at the time!

Apparently you didn’t read the article or watch the video clip – the police were “pursuing” in a helicopter… more like monitoring – the parasite probably wasn’t even aware they were being followed by police. And if the police simply just phoned ahead, what actions do you suggest, since you seem to be opposed to police pursuing criminals? And how could they be sure the driver was going to Canberra unless they followed them in their helicopter?
And whose side are you on anyway? Are the police at fault for seeking to apprehend criminals, or the criminals at fault for attempting to flee, and doing so incompetently? And who crashed (causing death) in the incidents you refer to – the police, or the criminals who apparently couldn’t drive as well as they had assumed they could?

I did read the article and the police pursuit commenced on the M7 in Sydney and lasted all the way to Canberra. The pursuit involved multiple NSW agencies and aerial surveillance as pointed out in the article.

And in answer to your question the tragic incident I am referring to 10 years ago involved NSW police pursuing a stolen vehicle from QBN across ACT borders. This pursuit culminated in the loss of 4 lives including a young child.
