Rivett man charged after allegedly threatening to lock wife in chicken cage

A Rivett man who allegedly threw a bucket of water over his wife and threatened to lock her in a chicken cage in the backyard was among five Canberrans arrested on Saturday on various family violence charges.

The 53-year-old has been charged with aggravated common assault occasioning actual bodily harm, aggravated common assault and forcible confinement.

Police allege the man assaulted his wife, including by throwing a bucket of water at her and pushing her from behind, causing her to fall. He is also accused of threatening to lock her in a chicken cage in the couple’s backyard.

In a separate incident, a 36-year-old Palmerston man was charged after allegedly strangling his partner.

Also on Saturday, a 33-year-old Reid man was charged with aggravated common assault occasioning actual bodily harm for allegedly striking his ex-partner in the face.

The remaining two arrests involved a 30-year-old Banks woman and a 31-year-old Chisolm man, both charged with allegedly assaulting their partners. The Chisolm man also faces an additional charge of property damage.

All five offenders are expected to face the ACT Magistrates Court today (25 August).

In a statement, ACT Policing said it “stands ready to assist victims experiencing family violence”.

“Family violence can present itself in different ways, such as threatening or abusive messages or behaviours, property damage, intimidation and control, and physical violence,” the statement read.

“If you are in this situation – when it is safe to do so – please contact police on 131 444 or Triple Zero (000) in an emergency, or contact a support service who can assist with crisis support, safety planning and advice.”

Services include:

  • Triple Zero (000) in an emergency or life-threatening situation.
  • Police Assistance on 131 444 for non-emergencies.
  • The Domestic Violence Crisis Service offers a 24-hour crisis line, advice, safety planning, and information and can be reached on 02 6280 0900.
  • The Canberra Rape Crisis Centre provides a 24-hour crisis line and can be contacted on 6247 2525.
