Police are worried lethal drugs could be circulating in the Canberra community after two people died of separate suspected drug overdoses in the last several days.
Last year, 20 people died of suspected drug overdoses, an ACT Policing spokesperson said.
This included two people who died from suspected overdoses in separate incidents within 24 hours.
Since last Saturday (23 August), two people died as a result of suspected overdoses in separate incidents, a police spokesperson said on Wednesday (27 August).
“ACT Policing is urging people with drug dependencies and those around them to be aware of the signs of overdose and not to hesitate before seeking medical assistance,” the spokesperson said.
“Users can also collect free naloxone kits from chemists and other health facilities.
“Drugs can be tested at CanTEST, which provides free and confidential chemical analysis of pills and drugs intended for personal use, as well as tailored information and harm reduction advice.”
Support services for those using drugs include:
- Canberra Alliance for Harm Minimisation and Advocacy promotes the health and rights of people who use drugs and drug treatment services
- CanTEST is a free drug and pill testing service
- Canberra Health Services offers a range of services, including counselling and treatment, as well as a needle and syringe program.
