A Palmerston man has become Canberra’s fifth road fatality after an incident over the October long weekend.

An ACT Policing spokesperson said that a 56-year-old man died following a motorcycle accident on Monday afternoon (6 October).

An officer patrolling on Tidbinbilla Road saw a group of riders allegedly speeding.

Shortly after, one of the riders failed to make a right-hand bend in the road and hit a tree.

Other riders and the police officer started CPR; however, the man died at the scene.

Major Collision team members are investigating the circumstances of the accident, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

He is the ACT’s fifth person to die on Canberra’s roads in 2025.

On the same day in March, a cyclist died after a collision with a car in central Canberra, and a bus and motorcycle collided in Nicholls.

The following month, a man from Sydney died several weeks after being involved in a single-vehicle crash in Watson.

In the fourth fatality, a pedestrian died in late September after being struck by a light rail vehicle.

There were 11 road deaths in 2024.
