Motorists will face more disruptions and a long-term carpark will close this week as part of ongoing and new infrastructure works in the city.

The start of construction on the new Lyric Theatre and the continuing enabling works for Light Rail Stage 2A will affect drivers heading into the CBD.

Infrastructure Canberra says that from Tuesday, 14 October, the Theatre Lane carpark on the corner of Northbourne Avenue and London Circuit next to CMAG will close to become a works compound for the Lyric Theatre project.

The works will prepare for construction and include fencing the site, setting up work sheds, relocating services, and enabling The Playhouse to stay open during the construction of the new theatre.

The carpark will remain closed until 2028 due to the main construction works, pending approvals. However, the block is on the government’s land release list for development.

The Canberra Theatre Centre will be transformed in stages. Stage one will build the new Lyric Theatre for major productions such as Broadway musicals, international artists, ballet and opera.

Later stages will improve the Canberra Theatre, The Playhouse and the Courtyard Studio.

Infrastructure Canberra says critical work is continuing to prepare underground utilities for light rail and to improve the stormwater drainage system in the city.

This will mean that from 8 pm Friday, 17 October, to 6 am Monday, 20 October, Northbourne Avenue will be closed southbound between Cooyong Street and Vernon Circle.

Detours will be in place with signage to guide motorists and on-road cyclists.

“We are mindful as we make the necessary changes in the city to build these projects to enhance the city centre, it will mean new ways to travel to and through the city,” Infrastructure Canberra says.

The agency is urging road users to plan their journey and check travel times.

It says there are parking alternatives available with more than 5000 parking spaces available across the city and surrounding areas, including the new Nangari Street carpark.

Changes to the light rail site compounds will also allow more than 200 car spaces to be reopened at the City Hill carpark. This compound will be moved to the Acton Waterfront.

Accessible parking, share car spaces, medical, and government vehicles have been relocated to City Hill and Hobart Place carparks.

Whatever happened to the requirement for contractors to erect Hoardings and place their sheds on top of them instead of them taking over huuuuge areas of the city and town centres for “compounds”????
