The thing with grits, as with many things, is the sufficient application of *tomato sauce*!
Fixed that for you, JB. There is no food that cannot be improved by the simple addition of tomato sauce.

Careful, this could be enough to start an add hominy attack.

refixed.
Ok, so I’ve never actually thought about this before – but what exactly are grits?
I always thought they were something people from the olden days in the wild wild west ate because they didn’t have real food.

Note that the author’s husband likes Nutella crepes with bacon and banana. She also gives tips for adding extra sweetness.
Now that’s inspiring. Maple syrup is the obvious solution for extra sweetness.
Speaking of American stuff, there’s a breakfast condiment (?) called Fluff which I have only seen at Batemans Bay Coles, and refused to buy when begged by various people. It is marshmallow for breakfast, and seems to make Nutella look super-healthy. (Those funny Italians with their healthy breakfast spreads!)
Here is a recipe using both Fluff and Nutella. If anyone makes it and lives, please let me know:

Their civilisation is doomed.
(And yes, I mentioned bacon.)

Hi There, I have a box in my pantry that an American friend of mine gave to me to try last time she went home, but I’ve been too scared to try them. They sound horrible.
You’re more than welcome to collect them from me if you’d like them. They’re the Quakers brand.
We live in the northern end of Tuggeranong.
Let me know!

They even had the Zatarains File` powder, I needn’t have smuggled a jar back last time.
At least it’s a convenient shape for smuggling 😀
No Coolwhip though. Only American food i like…full of crap but gorgeous.

Well, if you haven’t found USA Foods yet, http://www.usafoods.com.au/ you should get onto it! Very good range. They even have my favourite mexican sauce, Valentina. Sadly not the Extra Hot, but four 1-litre bottles is tiding me over until my next US trip.
The shop itself is just a concrete-floored small outlet in an industrial area, but all the taxi drivers know exactly where it is, many make the pilgrimage out ot Moorabin. But for lightweight things, mail order’s the go.

Grits are bloody horrible, cannot fathom why anyone would want to ingest them.
Plain grits, I’d agree with you, but have you ever had cheese grits? OMFG, they are awesome. And now I’m totally craving them and still don’t know where to get any here, bah!
Thanks for the tip on the place in Manuka though. I’m an American ex-pat and always on the look out for where to get food from home! There’s a shop in the Fyshwick markets that has some American imports as well–no idea of the name, it’s one of the Asian groceries and the American foods are right in the front window.
The thing with grits, as with many things, is the sufficient application of butter!

USA mentioned in the same breath as food? The horror, the horror!!!!

Surely Costco? They’ve singlehandedly americanised canberra’s restaurant menus!
You do see rather a lot of blokes in cheffy duds plundering the fish and meat displays, especiallly late in the week. Sometimes trolleys wiht all sorts of goodies in them.
Reminds me of a mate who went to the US and saw grits on the menu. When he asked the waitress was grits was the reply was “Whah grits is grits!”
Grits are bloody horrible, cannot fathom why anyone would want to ingest them. The deli outside Coles at Manuka has a very diverse range of foreign foods, including a lot of Mexican staples and some US stuff. Failing that, USA Foods in Moorabin. I visit it when in Melbourne although learned the hard way that it’s a very long walk from the train station. They do mail order and for light stuff like grits, that’d be a good option.

Does the crackle and smell of sizzling bacon make you want to come crawling back to the dark side of meat eating, Poetix? :p
There’s a dark side to eating meat? Is that like, when, you totally burn one side of your chop, but not the other?
The texture and taste of oysters call me far more than fatty piggy bits, doc. And prawns, too.

And Deref, it would have been nice to have one food thread where no-one mentioned pork….Just one. Once.

usafoods.com.au seem to have a decent turnover if you can’t find locally

A thread without pork is like a pig without apple sauce.

As in hominy? Try polenta if you can’t locate, although health food store might be your best bet.
