Canberra Liberals Leader Mark Parton has played down talk of internal divisions after the Right reasserted itself in the weekend’s elections for office bearers at the party’s Annual General Meeting.

Adam Morris, the husband of Mr Parton’s deputy, Deborah Morris, was elected party president over Sam Doyle and acting president Karen Walsh.

The Brindabella-based couple are considered close to former senator and party power broker Zed Seselja, and will now sit together on the management committee.

The Right also captured the vice-presidency with Patrick Fazzone.

Mr Morris takes over from Nick Tyrrell, who resigned when he won preselection as the Liberals’ lead Senate candidate for the next federal election.

Mr Tyrrell’s election as president in 2024 by 177 votes to 116, along with other post-Zed figures, was hailed at the time as a shift to the centre for the party.

The desire for change was first signalled at a rowdy AGM last November, where longstanding president John Cziesla, who had the backing of Zed Seselja and Jeremy Hanson, was booted for an empty chair 117 votes to 122.

Mr Cziesla launched an appeal against the decision, which was ultimately unsuccessful.

In a social media video, Mr Parton congratulated the new office bearers and made light of the return to the Right.

“I do find it amusing that most of the commentary about our party events comes from people who are way outside of the tent,” he said.

“And most of it is based on this fixation that they have with internal drama.

“Not really sure where they’re coming from, but we’ve got a great team that’s been installed, and I look forward to working with everyone on it.”

It is understood that numbers at the AGM on Saturday were well down on previous meetings.

Mr Parton, a party moderate, emerged from the party room ruck last month as Leader after a year of bitter division between Liberal MLAs, notably Peter Cain and Elizabeth Lee, who refused to sit in shadow cabinet under Leanne Castley’s leadership.

He now has the job of healing those divisions and welding together a competitive team for 2028.

Oh well that ensures the Libs will remain unelectable in the ACT with their Trumpy world view.

@Alex Burleigh
Similar values? Advocating for that Christian vote and big families aye Alex Burleigh!

The Canberra liberal party can only win the next election if they have mainstream media on there side, it’s that simple.
Labor has won for that reason for many years, because mainstream media know what the Canberra people want, and that is an inclusive people, and that’s what makes Canberra tick.
Tolerance and understanding of all ethnic backgrounds and of different beliefs and ideas.

So what are you suggesting then? Should “mainstream” media obfuscate the facts and give an impression that the church of seselja has no part? I just want an opposition that tastes like real opposition!!!

The Awaken Hillsong Hilly Billies are back in charge, word is Andrew Barr had a party when he heard the news.

Not only will the ALP retain Govt , more Liberal MLAs will now be the target of independent / teals candidates who will be closer to the concerns of the electorate as opposed to these Zed MLA puppets.

Well done Canberra Liberals…..

Here I was thinking the election of Mark Parton as party leader, this pretend moderate, paved the way for a new beginning. A fresh leader who will show some intelligence and clout and bring the party back from the depths of its far right fogeyism to the middle ground.

But despite appearances to the contrary, it seems it is business as usual for funny man Mark Parton. Finding it amusing and making light of another “internal drama”, using stunts and his unique and blokey style of language, playing down talk of any divisions shortly after the Right of the party reasserted itself at Saturday’s AGM. For those taking an interest in the meeting, it was hard not to predict how proceedings would evolve, with the party’s most senior, and conservative federal member James Patterson invited along to oversee proceedings and the irrelevant Mr Parton looking on in the background.

One wonders what type of backroom deals Mr Parton did with the conservative bloc of the Canberra Liberals to comfortably transition first termer and the party’s most conservative and far-right member Deborah Morris into the deputy role. Not to mention the election of her equally extreme husband into the party’s presidency. Both closely aligned with Zed Seselja and now sitting together on the management committee. It was equally alarming, but not surprising to see those who have done so much to destroy the party over the years, those from the most fanatical elements of the party including the Young Liberal movement elected to supporting roles.

No wonder the party’s membership is in decline.

Stop losing so hard canberra libs. Mark parton had a bee’s **** of a chance at beating barr, purely for name recognition amongst older canberrans and his upbeat enthusiasm, he just had to keep his mouth shut about gambling but now with a zed comparison on this “power couple” the Morris’s… Canberra is doomed to unopposed andy and chris running us into the ground before they jump ship to melbourne and leave us to pick up the bill.
