Police have laid charges after an investigation into an alleged sexual assault said to have taken place at a party in Canberra last year.

An ACT Policing spokesperson alleged a man attended a party in June 2025 when he sexually assaulted a woman while she was asleep.

The incident was reported to police and officers searched the man’s vehicle this week, the spokesperson said.

The alleged offender, 30-year-old Henry Joseph Raisoqomi from Moncrieff, faced the ACT Magistrates court on Friday (9 January) where he was formally charged with sexual intercourse without consent and committing an act of indecency without consent.

His defence lawyer, James McGuire, said he would enter pleas of not guilty and apply for bail, which was opposed by the prosecution.

Prosecutor Madeleine Gallo said multiple witnesses were yet to be interviewed and she alleged Mr Raisoqomi had made multiple attempts to try and contact the woman.

Mr McGuire said the charges did not relate to fresh allegations, as they were said to have taken place six months ago.

He also said while police made vague allegations about his client trying to make contact with witnesses, there were no specific allegations about such attempts.

“There is no suggestion of any form of threat,” Mr McGuire said.

“There’s no hint of reoffending. There’s no allegation that the community is in need of protection.”

He said Mr Raisoqomi came to Australia in 2011 when he was 16, went to school in Canberra and had strong ties to the community.

Magistrate Jane Campbell said the allegations were very serious, but Mr Raisoqomi had no prior criminal history and there was nothing to suggest he would interfere with witnesses.

She granted bail on conditions including he not contact the woman nor a list of other people and the matter was adjourned to 5 February.
