ACT Policing is investigating two suspicious fires at the Calwell Shops which occurred late last night (Tuesday, January 29).
About 10.20pm ACT Policing were called to attend the scene of a fire outside a shop after ACT Fire and Rescue deemed the fire as being intentionally lit.
A short time later, police were informed of another fire in a rubbish skip at the rear of the shopping complex. Both fires were extinguished by ACT Fire and Rescue.
Acting Superintendent Daryl Neit said both fires caused minimal damage and there was no structural damage to the building, but the reckless act is dangerous and potentially life threatening.
“People need to be aware that lighting fires is a serious matter,” Acting Superintendent Neit said
“Police patrol shopping centers and if we catch someone deliberately lighting a fire and putting life and property at risk, they should expect to be charged and put before the court.”
Police ask that anyone who may have witnessed these incidents, or who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the area around the Calwell Shops, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
