An alleged chair-throwing brawler was “something of a magnet” for other young men seeking to prove themselves in venues with alcohol, his lawyer said.

Police said a brawl broke out inside the Gungahlin Lakes Golf and Community Club about 6:40 pm on Anzac Day this year, growing to involve a number of men.

One man was allegedly left with a fractured eye socket and concussion, while he and a second man had cuts to their heads.

Last week, police arrested 27-year-old Jayden Stephen Kirkman of Florey and 20-year-old Jake Hardie of Casey over their alleged involvement in the fight and charged them with affray.

Hardie was granted bail, but Kirkman was not and spent several days in custody before applying for bail a second time in the ACT Magistrates Court on Tuesday (27 May).

Prosecutor Liam Taylor alleged CCTV captured Kirkman throwing multiple punches, as well as throwing a chair at one man.

He allegedly punched another man in the head, sending him backwards onto the ground.

The court heard Kirkman, who works as a concreter, has a criminal history of unrelated offending.

His defence lawyer Paul Edmonds said his client was “quite a large young man” while his hairstyle was “something approaching a mullet”.

He said his client was “something of a magnet” for other young men in licensed premises “who seek to prove themselves” about who was the toughest young man in the venue.

“He is a magnet for trouble,” the lawyer said.

Mr Edmonds said his client had full-time work, was supported by his family members in the courtroom and would enter a not guilty plea to his charge.

Mr Taylor, who opposed bail, said a large number of people were at the country club when the brawl broke out.

He said police were seeking medical documents regarding the injuries caused to the two men and more charges may be laid as a result of those injuries.

The prosecutor alleged Kirkman had a high tendency to violence and when alcohol was in play, it led to physical violence.

Magistrate Jane Campbell said at least two people were seriously injured in the brawl.

She said it appeared “quite clearly” to her that Kirkman had no regard for court orders and she had “absolutely no confidence whatsoever” he would comply with bail conditions.

Bail was refused and the matter was adjourned to 17 July for a pre-hearing mention.

Kirkman, appearing in the courtroom over an audio-visual link, blew kisses when he heard he would be refused bail and said, “love you mum”.
