An attempted murder charge has been laid after a man was allegedly repeatedly stabbed outside his home last month and left with life-threatening injuries.

Fasil Jember, 33, was already in custody when the case against him was mentioned in the ACT Magistrates Court on Tuesday (29 April).

Earlier, ACT Policing alleged he had gone to the home of a woman known to him in southern Canberra at around 8:40 pm on 30 March 2025.

While there, he allegedly got into an argument with one of the woman’s male neighbours before he pulled out a knife and stabbed the man several times.

He also reportedly hit the woman and kicked her in the face before taking her mobile phone and fleeing the scene.

“Police and emergency services arrived a short time later and the man was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries,” a police spokesperson said.

Jember was arrested earlier this month for unrelated offences.

Following an investigation by ACT Policing’s Criminal Investigations, he was charged with attempted murder, assault and intentionally inflicting grievous bodily harm over the allegations from 30 March.

While he was scheduled to face the Magistrates Court on Tuesday, his lawyer, Zac McBride from Peter Bevan & Co, said his client was not required in court as he had only been told about the attempted murder charge that morning.

“You don’t want to be blindsided by this sort of charge,” Magistrate Jane Campbell said.

Mr McBride asked for a two-week adjournment and Magistrate Campbell granted this, adjourning the matter to 13 May.

Jember remains in custody.
