A driver allegedly had a seven-month-old baby in his car while fleeing police in car chases that stretched from Sydney to Goulburn.

Officers allegedly saw a sedan speeding at 168 km/h in a 110 km/h zone on the Hume Highway at Blair Athol in Campbelltown on the night of 7 August, a NSW Police spokesperson said.

The officers tried to make the driver stop and gave chase when he didn’t, but the chase was terminated due to safety concerns.

The sedan was soon spotted at a service station in Sally’s Corner, which is near Sutton Forest, but the driver again allegedly refused to stop for police and another chase started on the Hume Motorway.

The chase ended when the sedan stopped at a service station on Hume Street in Goulburn, but when police approached the vehicle the 35-year-old driver allegedly locked himself inside forcing the officers to smash a window to arrest him.

The officers found the allegedly unrestrained baby – known to the man – seated in the front passenger seat.

“NSW ambulance attended and assessed the baby, who appeared to be uninjured, before he was taken to Goulburn Base Hospital for monitoring,” the police spokesperson said.

“The child is now in his family’s care.”

The man allegedly tested positive to methylamphetamine and was taken Goulburn Hospital for further monitoring.

Once he was released, he was taken to Goulburn Police Station and handed a raft of charges.

These included police pursuit, not complying with direction given by police officer, driving with one passenger’s seatbelt or restraint not properly fastened, speeding at more than 45 km/h over the limit and dishonestly obtaining property by deception.

He was granted conditional bail to appear in Goulburn Local Court on 26 August, where the matter was adjourned to 10 September.

The man, who remains on bail, is not named due to concerns around potentially identifying the baby.
