A court has granted bail to a man facing historical sexual assault charges that accuse him of abusing a woman for almost a decade.
The woman approached police in February 2025 and claimed her ex-partner raped or indecently assaulted her multiple times between the 2000s and the 2010s, an ACT Policing spokesperson said.
The spokesperson said after an extensive investigation by the Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Team, officers went to the now-33-year-old man’s home in Canberra earlier this week and placed him under arrest.
He was handed three counts each of sexual intercourse without consent and committing an act of indecency without consent before he faced the ACT Magistrates Court on Wednesday (7 January).
Magistrate Glenn Theakston did not formally charge him as his lawyer, Satomi Hamon of CODA Criminal Law, said he was aware of the six charges before the court.
Ms Hamon applied for bail and prosecutor Julia McLean said the lawyers had agreed on conditions as well as a list of names of people he should not be allowed to contact.
Magistrate Theakston granted bail on the conditions and the man, appearing in court over an audio-visual link, answered, “yes”, when asked if he understood them.
The man, who is not named to avoid identifying the woman, will return to court on 6 February. No pleas were entered.
