Best Place to Buy Firecrackers?

Adam and Eve are not the best prices for bags (keep note for next year). They claim 50-60% off normal prices but a store around the back of the Higgins Shops sells the same bags in all the same sizes for $20-$30 cheaper (depending on the size).

Also the quality has gone up from previous years, our bags only had 2 or 3 fountains and the rest were the entertaining “Flaming Ball” style.

As most likely already stated, this year was a trial run, if too many incidents regarding property damage occurred, fireworks would be off indefinitely.

If you don’t enjoy the fireworks, instead of whining about it and ruining it for the rest of us just simply lock yourselves in your house, close your curtains, pump up the Brahm, pour a nice glass of Chardon and revel in your superior dignified refinement. Do not fear, you will always be better then us cretins who enjoy bright, colorful lights and loud noises…

If the Government is going to introduce these laws restricting time and day of use and purchasing, they could at least do a little bit more to advertise the fact.

Forcing advertisers to treble their media buy to sell the Government message is just wrong.

Heard an ad on the radio this morning for Sportsman Warehouse selling them. The disclaimer at the end was the longest in history maybe twice as long as the ad itself – obviosuly a new requirement.

Anyway, I learnt that you can only let them off between 5 and 9 on saturday and Sunday only. Must be a Canberra resident to buy them and the selling hours are also limited to this Fri, Sat and Sun.

For people out Gungahlin way, you can get them at Denman Cellars. Booze and fireworks, is there any better combination?

Saw this afternoon you can buy them at Tuggers hyperdome already. There was a stall set up in the middle of the walkway near Coles selling pre-packaged set-price bags. I was under the impression they weren’t purchasable until Friday but from this topic I’m getting the impression its just about when you can legally advertise….

Bring on lots of totally huge awesome ones with a lot of bang. I don’t need to buy any, I get enough kicks watching every other house set ’em off. (obviously I haven’t been in Canberra long enough yet).

I actually have friends who make the trip to Canberra over the cold long weekend to relive the fun of crackers from their youth.

I implore people not to blow stuff up and potentially lose this fun for good.

If you’re going to be out doing your own original research into Canberra’s firework underground, remember to ask for “small pest control” (to keep away rats and possums, as in the smaller, match-head light-and-throw varieties), or for the heavier varieties “warren and foxhole destruction”, not “fireworks”.
Anything other than the recreational ones allowed this weekend are highly illegal, and even for the legal ones you will need a license.
Don’t get me wrong, using these terms won’t provide you with any degree of legal backing or leg to stand on if charged, they just describe a proposed use for something other than the sparking fountains and bees.
Actually buying the fireworks is illegal, subject to fines or criminal penalties, etc.
Selling the fireworks is also illegal, subject to fines, penalties, or summary castration.
I don’t know, I’m no lawyer.

Some retailers will just give you a knowing smile and say no, others will agree with you about how much fun explosives used to be.
Those that can’t hook you up may be willing to send you in the right direction.
Wether or not this is considered illegal, I don’t know.

There was a ratfeatured guy selling from a short-term lease premises in Phillip (near the fake horse on Townsend St) last year, and apparently a guy selling from a furniture store in Tuggeranong.
FIIK where the those two can be found this year, just hunt around.

Adam and Eve do indeed sell cheaper individual fireworks, but last year they were doing the “cheap bees are only being sold with cheap (and nasty) porn”.
Apparently it increases the apparent sales figures for both.
So don’t bring the kids along.

Adam and Eve is always the cheapest, they claim to have half price fireworks. Not sure if they are THAT much cheaper, but you definitely get more bang for your buck *can’t believe nobody has used that pun yet* and you walk away with quite a significant amount more than from other places. I’ve never taken them up on the free DVD offer, but there’s that too.

Always are, probably why fireworks have been going off around my neighbourhood for the past 4 days or so. Didn’t the CT catch one of the retailers at it a few years ago and then the authorities did nothing about it?

I used to love watching the fireworks as a kid.. mostly of other people because my parents didn’t like burning their cash in large quantities. These days they sell them for 1 week and you hear them for the next 3 months blowing up letterboxes and other property at 2am. The Government can’t control them, the police are stretched as it is so they can’t do anything and a large number of people can’t do the right thing, so they can do away with them all together for all I care.

I hope there are LOTS of big bangers this year.

Jesus H F**king Christ! When did this site become so priggish? I’d love to see Consumer Affairs or the OH&S zealots or whoever try to prove in court that a posting recommending a fireworks outlet on this site was actually an advertisement.

There’s a dedicated shop being setup in the Homeworld Centre in Tuggeranong, next to the Camping store. Dunno what their prices will be though….

I was resisting doing the ‘bah humbug’ thing, but the alternative to buying the fireworks is to a) set fire to $100 in notes of mixed denominations, b) make a lot of loud popping, crackling and fizzing noises with your mouth, then c) go around your neighbourhood and terrorise random, unsuspecting animals.

(I used to love fireworks when I was younger, but I went right off them ten years ago when thanks to the moronic single-celled organisms that lived in my (then) neck of Kambah blew everything within sight up or out of the ground at all hours of the night, and my beloved kelpie got super-spooked and ended up under the wheels of a car, resulting in lots of needless pain and suffering, $$$$$s of medical bills, and finally the lethal shot to put her out of her misery. As for the Fyshwich stores’ cross-promotion mentioned above, I have it on good authority there was a printing error on the title on the order forms for that particular film, and apparently “Horny Himalayan Hoes III” was ultimately only of benefit to Nepalese rose farmers with perverted gardening implement fetishes.

Then again, I seem to recall there were some really good ones in the bags last year – we were quite surprised at the bangs and display. I think I put the empty shells away so I’d remember what they were next time. Have to check the garage.

Last year I bought a large bag of fireworks from the Onya Bike store in Tuggers. I think it was $75 or $100 and seems to have a pretty good range of stuff in it.

Fireworks suppliers are restricted to pre-determined quantities in each bag, the price of which is prettymuch determined by the supplier.

Last year I think the adult stores were offering discounted fireworks with every porn sale, and also packaging some varieties of fireworks only with specific items of merchandise.
(IE: bags of bees a bargain at only $5 when you buy Horny Himalayan Hos III, free dildoes with every fireworks purchase over $250)
