It’s very hard to for Canberra Milk to differentiate their brand from others, so the jingle is their attempt to keep the brand name in everyone’s head. Not a bad jingle either, just a pity it’s let down by piss poor production values.

O’h yeah, all those Milko delivery posts remind me of the time my brother was a “Buttercup Baker” and home deliver bread. He had a customer who insisted that the bread be still “warm”, so she knew it was freshly baked. My brother obliged by keeping a loaf lodged in the engine bay of his van.

That’s nothing – when I moved here in 1969 we had the local Tip Top bakery delivering bread to your front door every morning. At one stage Sunblest bread had the day of the week on the wrapper.

When I was doing milk-run homogenised had blue tops and “country cream” had gold tops. For the life of me I can’t recall what was in the red-tops.

As for skim milk, only freaks drank it. Most of us would sooner drink our own urine.

Could have been red, I can’t really remeber that far back to be honest, I thought they were gold with blue for the lite or skim.

Yup I loved the old home delivery milk. Remember when it used to come in the glass bottles with the little gold or blue metal tops and there was 5mm of thick cream on the top. I used to love licking the cream off the inside of the lid. Explains a lot really!

My sister got run over by the local milko when she was about 8. She still has a visible tyre pattern on her knee 28 years later! I suppose in this day and age we would have sued the arse off the driver instead of inviting him for a cup of tea to calm him down. He was quite traumatised by it all. I suppose running over a kid does that!

I too fell off a milk truck in Woden back in the day smashing a dozen or so bottles and cutting up my hands in the process. The mean driver/operator handed me a pair of gardening gloves and made me finish my shift. The physical scars eventually healed but the emotional ones…

It all started to go downhill when the industrial revolution happened and we didn’t need to spend 14 hours a day breaking our backs just to eat…

Food and beverage provision does not have a high barrier to entry, it is very unlikely that Grocer’s are going to be able to extract the economic profits in the long term that you are flagging (note that economic profit is different to what the layman considers profit).

Self service is merely a gain in productivity and efficiency. This is a good thing. Yes there will be a temporary dislocation in a specific job type (and low skill retail is one of my jobs), but overall it will increase our prosperity. The now removed labour costs are now free for reinvestment, leading to more jobs and greater wealth. This money won’t end up in the hands of the ‘greedy capitalist pigdogs’ but in the hands of everyone.

If we had followed your economic beliefs, we’d still be out in the farm working 14 hours just so we could eat for the day. At least there’d be plenty of work I guess…

On old milkos, my dad used to be one here is the 60s. The old Commer van rattling down the road – that was him. Back when the greengrocer and “I like Swipe” trucks plied their wares around the Narrabundah streets every week without fail.

I hate these ads. I buy Woollies brand milk cos it’s cheaper.
