Christmas lunch in Canberra

The tradies is still open. The restaurant has closed.

Which raises an issue of itself, does anyone know what happened to the 83 restaurant? Why did it close down and where are the old owners, have they opened up elsewhere?

We also went there regularly for christmas lunch so have had to find other arrangements, last year we simply had a nice simple family lunch at home, saved a heap of money and still had good company.

The Yum Cha restaurant in Deakin above the soccer club is all you can eat and is fantastic.

Not exactly the same format you are looking for but would be great.

Not 100% sure they are open for Christmas but you could give them a call

I can’t imagine Christmas without the joy of being one of ten people in the kitchen, bringing forth fantastic English stodge for forty with an airconditioner trying to recreate a little bit of England right here in our own dining room!

Nonetheless, if you can’t cook your own Christmas dinner, I would recommend my hometown: Cabramatta. Absolutely everything is open on Christmas Day (except Woolies), and no one cooks better Vietnamese than those in Cabramatta!

If you don’t have any luck booking in somewhere at such late notice, perhaps you and your family could volunteer at a community soup kitchen on Christmas Day?

The food won’t be flash, but the warm and fuzzy feeling you’ll feel serving the needy of Canberra should be better than a five course meal.

I went to that “food court” buffet place in Dickson (China-Town) 2 years ago and it was terrible; ended up having to re-celebrate my Dad’s birthday dinner the next week. They could of improved though.

The Carrington at Bungendore used to have a beautiful meal. It was a three course set meal with alcohol included for around $100 if I remember correctly. Beautiful setting, beautiful food and good service.

Haven’t been there for a few years though – things could change.

Food court in Dickson (If it’s still there – above Ruby’s) seems similar.

Have you heard of that new eating place they’ve opened called “Home”? Great cooking, and a wonderful traditional family atmosphere….
