i wonder when ian finally succumbed to a hair cut – maybe 1976? or did he eschew the nascent punk influences and keep his bogan glory for decades?
Don’t knock it bro – I had hair like that but cut it off before I moved here. Looked a lot while Jesus while I had the locks but that was ok. Though I seemed to attract a lot of Catholic girls – when I moved here I had to leave a nice Catholic girl back in the old town and she wrote me a letter saying she was going to join a nunnery. True story.
🙂
This made the SMH opinion pages: http://www.smh.com.au/opinion/society-and-culture/its-been-more-than-three-decades-since-canberra-was-this-cool-20110713-1hdl9.html

If the picture set follows a logical sequence then the next picture of Ian would show him smoking a dart in bed.

Check out the nudie pencil holder on page 3. I doubt that would go down well these days!
So where was the 2nd drive-in? Page 6 reckons there will be 9 picture theatres, including two drive-ins…I remember going to the Starlight drive-in out past Watson as a kid in the 80’s, but was there a second one somewhere else at some stage?
I vow to wage a one-person campaign to bring back the sock-sandal combo displayed on page 6 in the Woden Plaza shot. Some fashions should never die.
It must have been fun living in the residences in those days given they were full of people in the same situation (and probably the same age) as you! Most people who come to Canberra now complain of the loneliness of not meeting people…these places were great for that!
Please note the Library barcode on the front cover.
Where else but your helpful Departmental Library are you likely to find relevant material going back more than a couple of years.
Probably the Library that digitized it for you as well.
I had 5 different people from 5 different workplaces and several different cities send me this in a two hour window this morning. The Gowrie Private Hotel pictured is now Fenner Hall, and the bookcase shown in the bedroom picture are still exists at Fenner.

I am particularly suspicious of her lovely colleague “Ian” – he doesn’t look shy to me 😀 seems a bit of a laydeez man…
Although with hair like that he may be more interested in personal grooming than the laydeez.
Done the rounds here today. Ian would be in the sh*te for his behaviour……trapping the poor girl by the book case. He’d be done for sexual harrassment before his coffee went cold now days…..
But the guy with the side burns is HOT!

Ahh the glorious days when the men did the thinking and the women did the typing.
If the women portrayed stuck it out in the APS, the secretary is now probably a Deputy Secretary (I think I saw the same powder blue pants suit and hat in DEEWR the other day) , the stenographer a cave dwelling IT program manager and the typist on compo with RSI.
Is the one on the left pointing the way she thinks she needs to go to escape to Sydney? (Or Yass?) She looks a little angry.
Seriously, it was only 7 years before this gem was published that married women were allowed to keep working in the public service. Which may explain the emphasis on ‘girls’?
Are the ladies still with us? Would be good to hear what they’ve got to say today.
I sent this in to JB too. It’s pretty super-mega-awesome, haha!
