Looking for something a bit different to entertain the whole family this summer?
From 12 to 20 December, Yarralumla’s iconic Albert Hall will come to life with a heartfelt rendition of Engelbert Humperdinck’s beloved opera Hansel & Gretel.
The original story may be a familiar one … but this rendition comes with a twist.
Get ready to fall in love with the timeless fairytale in a brand new light. Follow two mischievous siblings as they face danger and delight in the midst of a magical forest that looks a whole lot like Canberra, discovering more about themselves and each other than ever before.
Humperdinck’s Hansel & Gretel is an ever-popular Christmas production that has charmed European audiences for generations. The National Opera cast and crew are beyond excited to showcase his rich melodies and depth of story.
“Opera embodies the very best elements of art,” says Teresa Wojcik, who plays Hansel.
“It’s a real feast for the senses, a fusion of story, song, costume, staging, and live orchestra.
“Hansel & Gretel brings the characters you know and love to life, but there are also new faces, woodland creatures, and colourful creations to explore.”
Translated to English and performed under the direction of local maestro PJ Williams, the production promises to immerse its audience in a world filled with wonder, adventure, and plenty of heart.

Teresa’s opera journey began in 2013. After graduating from the University of Otago in New Zealand, she moved to Germany and joined a travelling opera company called OpernRetter.
“My time with OpernRetter was incredible. We toured across central Europe, visiting schools and introducing opera to kids from all walks of life,” she says.
“Performing for kids requires a unique approach. It’s very rewarding. They’re so curious, energetic, and open to new experiences.
“There’s nothing quite like seeing their faces light up when they experience opera for the first time.”
Hansel & Gretel is designed to captivate audience members of all ages. Expect a 13-piece orchestra, plenty of energy, and interactions that get everyone involved – including mums and dads.
Hansel is a male role, so becoming him is a task Teresa approaches with great care. She sees the role as an opportunity to push herself, but always keeps her duty to the male character and his audience front of mind.
“Getting into the costume and mindset of an 11-year-old boy is obviously complex for an adult woman,” she says.
“I think it’s really important that our younger audience members see someone they can relate to, rather than an over-the-top caricature or simplified stereotype.
“Hansel is a quick and clever protector. He has so much heart, but he’s not perfect, because no 11-year-old is. I can’t wait to introduce him to Canberra.”
National Opera’s Hansel & Gretel is on show at Albert Hall, Yarralumla, from 12 to 20 December 2025. Tickets available online via Trybooking.
