Police allege a man already disqualified from driving was caught behind the wheel while drunk after reaching speeds of about 170 km/h in western Canberra.

An ACT Policing spokesperson said officers were patrolling near Uriarra Village on Sunday afternoon (22 June) when members of the public told police a grey Mercedes was driving dangerously in the area.

The officers found a grey Mercedes driving along Uriarra Road, allegedly reaching 172 km/h in a 100 km/h zone.

They stopped the vehicle and spoke to the 32-year-old male driver from Higgins.

“He was confirmed as disqualified from holding or obtaining a driver’s licence until 2028 and when breath tested, returned a positive roadside test for alcohol. He later returned a reading of .100,” the police spokesperson alleged.

The man will face the ACT Magistrates Court at a later date, charged with driving while disqualified, speeding and drunk driving.

The spokesperson asked for anyone who witnessed the grey Mercedes in the Cotter and Uriarra areas – including those people who alerted officers to the incident – to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website.
